Osteocalcin is a calcium-binding protein in the blood that acts as a biochemical marker for bone formation. Serum osteocalcin is measured via a lab test, typically ordered for women past menopause. Osteocalcin relies on vitamins D3 and K2, especially in the form of MK-7. These nutrients support healthy bone metabolism via their supportive relationship with osteocalcin and calcium. K2 supports vitamin D with calcium uptake, safely guiding it to the bone.

K2 is available in supplement form as MK-7 and MK-4. MK-7 is the more bioavailable and active form of K2, which can be dosed once daily, making it the superior form of vitamin K2. MK-4 has a short half-life, so it requires multiple doses throughout the day.

Vitamins A, D3, and K2 are fat-soluble nutrients that work in concert to perform a balancing act. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption, but in high doses and unchecked, it can potentially increase the risk of depositing calcium into the arteries. Co-factor vitamins K2 and A balance high levels of vitamin D3 by preventing calcium oversaturation and reducing the risk of misguided arterial calcium deposits.
